Even though the heat index in Savannah is 103 degrees today, I kind’ve feel like I could be in that P. Rod Nike SB commercial. Today has been a good day. I got a jump on the day and got some good photos before breakfast, then went to the darkroom and made some good prints. Then I headed over to hear Benny Gold talk. He graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in ‘98 and came back to share some of his knowledge on how to make it in the design world. I first noticed him while following various street culture blogs and his style caught my attention. His story is truly an inspiration. He started off working as a designer for other companies out in San Francisco and ended up gaining a following of his own by doing freelance projects on the side. Companies started wanting his name attached to collaborations he was doing and eventually he was able to start his own brand. I think that’s incredible. He is basically like the Michael Jordan (who was able to start his own brand by being really good at what he did) of design. Not only does he run his own super successful brand, but he still collaborates with some of the biggest names in the industry. He talked about how he works hard and surrounds himself by things that inspire him. He has gained a following by doing what he loves and by being true to his style. I really admire that and some day I hope to be able to say that about my career. He was a really cool guy and I’m glad that he took the time to come talk to some eager lil’ college kids. I can’t wait to see where the Benny Gold brand goes from here.
